In recent years, there has been a growing recognition within Fraternity & Sorority Life (FSL) offices nationwide to prioritize member education and forging of meaningful partnerships. This focus reflects a recommitment to fostering personal growth, academic excellence, and the overall development of well-rounded individuals affiliated as members and as UCI Anteaters. A brief snapshot of these initiatives can be found on this page.
Hazing Prevention
- SFL, councils and chapters provide educational programming for potential new members and current members. All chapter leaders are required to individually complete Anti-Hazing Compliance Agreement Form and Anti-Hazing COOL Module to register as a campus organization. Participant in UCI Anti-Hazing Coalition, which support campus-wide efforts to foster a healthy campus climate. For information, available at UCI Hazing Prevention website.
Peer-Education
- SFL organizations participate in peer-education series on power-based personal violence. Led by student volunteers and advised by UCI personnel, the Violence Intervention and Prevention (VIP) program educates current students on bystander intervention and builds awareness of useful campus resources through contemporary curriculum.
Member Education and Development
- SFL facilities environments that promote member education and development for chapter members and executive board leaders in weekly delegate/council meetings and biweekly President Council meetings. SFL also requires students who join a sorority or fraternity to attend its quarterly New Member Education program, held in-person or virtually.
Risk Management
- Creating safe and inclusive events is a key component of being a member of Sorority & Fraternity Life but broadly as a UCI Anteater. In collaboration with other campus stakeholders, SFL hosts its annual Wellness Week to address concerns of well-being and safety and reminders of preventable tragedies involving overconsumption of alcohol and other substances, hazing and more.
