Frequently Asked Questions (for Prospective Students)
Why join a sorority or fraternity?
Brotherhood and sisterhood is a unique benefit of joining a SFL organization. Members of fraternities and sororities create unique bonds that last a lifetime.
In addition, the tenets of sorority and fraternity life include scholarship, leadership, social development, community service, time management, participation in the university’s activities.
Can I still have friends outside of SFL if I join a a chapter at UCI?
Absolutely! Joining a sorority or fraternity doesn’t limit your ability to make friends outside of SFL but provides a close-knit community to connect with and tap on when applicable. UCI, like most college campuses, can provide an array of of student organizations, groups, and other miscellaneous extracurricular activities where you can meet other Anteaters from various backgrounds and interests.
What is the time commitment involved in belonging to a fraternity or sorority?
On average, students can contribute more than five (5) hours for meetings and activities during their new member process depending on the SFL organization.
Once initiation is over, most students may devote up to 10 hours per week to their brotherhood or sisterhood. Optional SFL organizational activities such as holding an executive board position, attending organizational social events and exchanges with other organizations, joining an intramural sports team or assisting with various community service projects require additional time. Academic performance can be affected by involvement in any extracurricular activity, including membership in a SFL organization. Many fraternities and sororities emphasize the importance of academics and can offer resources such as study groups, tutoring programs, and or academic support to their members.
With good time management, SFL activities can easily fit into students’ weekly schedules and allow plenty of time for classes, studying, work and participation in other campus activities.
What are the costs associated with joining a fraternity or sorority at UCI?
Being part of a fraternity or sorority often comes with financial responsibilities. These can include membership dues, fees for specialized events and activities, housing costs (if, they choose to live in the SFL chapter house), and other miscellaneous expenses.
It’s crucial to discuss these financial obligations with your student and ensure they understand the financial costs involved.
Do SFL organizations provide housing?
Currently there are ten (10) recognized and university owned themed-houses in the Arroyo Vista community.
- Sorority-themed houses include Alpha Chi Omega (PHA); Alpha Phi (PHA); Delta Delta Delta (PHA); Delta Gamma (PHA); Gamma Phi Beta (PHA); Kappa Alpha Theta (PHA); and Pi Beta Phi (PHA).
- Fraternity-themed houses include Kappa Sigma (IFC); Phi Gamma Delta (IFC) and Sigma Chi (IFC).
What is hazing and is it permitted at UCI?
Hazing is participation in any method of initiation (or pre-initiation) into a campus organization or other activity engaged in by the organization or members of the organization at any time that causes, or is likely to cause, physical injury or personal degradation or disgrace resulting in psychological harm to any student or other person.
All SFL organizations forbid hazing and are committed to membership experiences that speak toward our community pillars of Scholarship, Leadership, Friendship and Service.
Hazing is against the law in the State of California and is taken very seriously by our office, the UCI campus and the governing councils. UCI enforces this policy and any that violate the policy are subject to immediate suspension of their recognition and privileges. Sororities and fraternities are expected to follow campus policies, training and resources provided to groups to help shape a positive member experience.
